What Alucard had intended to do was to force Hilda's axe down, then step on it and leap over her to get a nice surprise strike in. But that's not what happens. Instead, the minute that she swipes for his sword hand, he throws the blade upwards and steps back, confident that the momentum of the strike will carry Hilda through and permit him to catch the blade.

Which he'll use vampire speed for, but only for flavor.]
