[ To say that she's surprised might come as a shock. After last year - well, for the last five years if she's being honest - she can't say that she took as much stock in her birthday's as she might once have growing up.
Wartime is a poor backdrop for celebrations for obvious reasons (but in spite of that she had tried to inject joy into the lives of those around here because it was important to remember there was still life to live outside the battlefield), and half the Summoned being kidnapping by some cultists shortly after her birthday certainly puts a damper on things.
All that is to say, she has low expectations for her birthday this year. But this is somehow more than she expects. Everything from the formality of it, the thought that had gone into the menu, to the thick cardstock it arrives on makes it feel like her heart has been dusted in sweet icing sugar. ]
